Bedford Square

Bedford Square View by John PiperSitting next to the Brighton Hotel and opposite the Victorian Bandstand, it was started in 1801 and finished by the late 1820's. Originally Bedford Square consisted of the two house's at the base of the square now part of Kings Road and the Brighton Hotel.
All the houses were quickly made into holiday and guest homes. Having its own private garden similar to Montpelier Terrace, the garden was eventually acquired by the Brighton Council in the mid 20th Century.

The Square was originally open in both top corners, the street entrance, and a pathway through where No's 26/27 are now. This path led to the church through Sillwood Street. That is perhaps why these houses in the far corner lack the fancy balconies, balustrade and roof line that all the other listed buildings do.

The Square now house's a variety of residents, and resounds to the sounds of children in the day, B-B-Q's in the evening and foreign students with guitars in the night. There is one guest house left in the square, but most are private or long stay houses with prices ranging from £90 per week to £200K

Increased ASB

E-mail Print PDF
There has been a marked increase in ASB within the Square recently.

In the last week we have had 2 arson attacks (one reported in the local
paper).

ASB from residents of one house that consisted of: Drunkenness, urinating in
the bushes, BBQ on the pathway, smoking possibly illegal substances. This
'party' was broken up by the police.

People yelling for their friends to let them in - at 2.30am!

A clamped car had its clamp forcibly removed by a motorist. Yes the police
got the reg number.

In general there is a dramatic increase in totally ASB within the square. If
you see anything that you think is unacceptable then either call crime
stoppers on 0800 555 111 or the police on 0845 60 70 999 - 999 if urgent

There has been a recent increase in the un acceptable behaviour within the square. This includes people who have been congregating on the benches and urinating in the bushes.
We have been informed of where these people are coming from but will not disclose it unless we have definate proof.
However if you spot anything then please inform the police immediately.

Bicycles

Bikes
These have been tagged for removal by the council. If you have a bike attatched to the park railings, please check if it is considered for disposal. If you attatch a bike to house railings, consider that it does not fall over and cause a danger.
